Troponin I (TnI) is the protein subunit that inhibits muscle contraction in the absence of calcium.  TnI is a 23.8 kDa (in cardiac) globular molecule binds to TnC, TnT, and actin.  The conformational changes from TnC are transmitted to the TnI to release its inhibitory binding to actin in the on state when calcium is present .  There are skeletal and cardiac isoforms of TnI that often manifest different functional characteristics.  The skeletal isoform of TnI strongly inhibits actomyosin ATPase even without tropomyosin (Tm) present;  the cardiac isoform’s inhibition is less strong
