Cystatin C is a 122 amino acid protein with a molecular mass of 13 kDa. Cystatin C is generated by all cells and distributed throughout intravascular fluid. After filtration, approximately 99% of the filtered cystatin C is reabsorbed and catabolized by the proximal tubular cells. There is some evidence for the existence of tubular secretion and extrarenal elimination, which has been estimated at 15% to 21% of renal clearance.
