SAA is normally found complexed with lipoproteins and different isoforms have been described with numbers varying by species.47 SAA represents one of the most conserved proteins among mammals supporting the premise that it has a basic and essential role in the innate immune system. In species with CRP, SAA often mirrors the magnitude and time course of the response.48 Studies have demonstrated SAA activity in chemotaxis of leukocytes as well as the induction of additional proinflammatory cytokines.49,50 In addition, SAA has also been described to induce extracellular matrix degrading enzymes which can assist in tissue repair.
